The airport gate address is: 10700 36th Pl W, Everett, WA 98204. When you get close, follow the signs for "West Ramp Access" and "Gate S-9". Ignore the Flying Heritage Museum's "Parking" sign. When you get to the gate, you'll see the sign for the fire department. Call 425 466 three seven one four when you arrive at the gate, and we'll send someone over to let you in.

We need volunteers to bring food for the grill (Burgers, Brats, Buns, condiments, etc.) or a side dish. Some extra chairs and folding tables are also needed. Significant others/kids encouraged. If weather permits would love to have some fly-ins so we can do our own ramp checks! The Flying Heritage Collection will be doing a fly day around noon, so we can also watch a Ilyushin IL-2M3 Shturmovik, a North American B-25 Mitchell, and a Republic P-47 Thunderbolt fly!

Please RSVP here and tell us what you're bringing so we can fill in the gaps on food or equipment.

See you there!
Tim NauglerNaughttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07267314934112638687noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5199019583540466232.post-25998809260760616142016-06-06T22:28:00.000-07:002016-06-06T22:28:13.658-07:00EAA 1440 June Meeting NoticeTuesday, June 21, 7PM, Redmond Library.
Learn about the technology that makes electronic flight information
systems affordable and practical for small general aviation aircraft. A
better understanding of the internal workings of these instruments will
illustrate how they offer reliability, affordable redundancy, and
greater situational awareness than venerable analog flight instruments.
Pilots of even 2-seat VFR aircraft will learn how they can improve
safety and situational awareness by making use of the latest in Glass
Panel avionics. Pilots of IFR aircraft will learn how to achieve more
capability and greater redundancy at lower cost. Learn not only the
benefits of this technology, but also the safety and training issues
relevant in making the transition from traditional analog instruments to
glass panel.

Next meeting is Tuesday, Feb. 16, 7PM, at the Bellevue Library!

Ron Wanttaja will present 'GA Maintenance and Exosystem Consequences'.

Every time someone takes a wrench to an airplane, there's a possibility
the work won't go right and the system you've worked on doesn't operate
properly. However, there are occasionally cases where the maintenance
mistake causes problems BEYOND the system in question. Controls jammed
by mis-routed wiring, or hydraulic leaks brought on when a
too-long screw is used to attach some fairings. Or, worst of all,
fires started by wrongly-installed avionics or bad fuel system work.

Ron has examined over 30 years of General Aviation accidents to
identify these cases of what he calls, "Exosystem Consequences." At the
meeting, he'll go over the results of his analysis...what kinds of
mistakes are being made, and what sort of consequences ensue.

The
topic alone should be interesting enough...but Ron performed this
analysis in support of another effort, one that holds promise to benefit
many aircraft owners.

!VENUE CHANGE! We're meeting at the Bellevue library, meeting room 3.

Please come with your $20 for the 1440 dues, as it's that time of year again...

-- !Bonus Presentation! --
Chris Foster, from the group that previously presented on the Boeing
Glassair, will be giving us a short presentation on a new clean-sheet
design, to get some feedback on the design, and solicit help on the
construction side.

If you know anything about composite mold making and/or resin infusion, please come to the meeting and talk to Chris!

We started promptly at 7pm with about 15 members present. We had 2 new faces introduce themselves. Tom Powers is in the final stages of an RV-8 build. He's already joined our FB group and you can see his progress on his personal page. I've forgotten the other gentlemen's name but remember he's considering a Cozy project and we got him connected with Joe Hull to talk composites.

Chapter business was minimal as Jason and Rob were absent this month. Jason I believe got the paperwork in so we have an official bank account again. If you haven't paid your 2014 dues yet please remember to email Jason with your preferred method of payment. Jason recommends paypal as its quick and easy. $20 dollars annually gets you free monthly programming by expert aviators, a wealth of member knowledge to help your own project along, and flyouts about twice a year . Now on to the main event!
This year was no exception as we had great presentations from both John Marzulli and Chad Hankins. With John of course low and slow in the Seven Oh Fun and Chad streaking to and fro in his still shiny RV-7, we had a great contrast in mission styles, particularly in their Oshkosh trips. John spent the entire week there soaking it all in, giving rides, and displaying his plane at the Zenith booth. Chad, on the other hand snuck in for all of 24 hours as a side trip to visiting family in Wyoming.
Publishing on behalf of Matt Mulder, as I was unable to attend. Thanks for taking the great notes, Matt!

5.20.14 7pm
Redmond Library

Officers present:
Matt Mulder, President
John Marzulli, VP
Jason Hills, Treasurer.

Great meeting tonight! The meeting was to order at 7:05. About 12 members present. Rob is out
of town so we skipped the Secretary’s report. Jason noted that May is chapter dues month. You
should have seen a Yahoo or FB post about it. $20 through paypal. Cash or check still work too.

A new face in the crowd introduced himself. Chris Crickmer is a recent transplant from Texas.
He’s well into an RV14 project and excited to find a chapter with active projects and flying RVs.
He’s also close to completing his PPL at Northway Aviation. Welcome Chris!

The floor was opened to discussion about this past weekend’s GA Day at Paine. Tome noted
that the crowd was kept on the opposite side of the runway relative to the FHC. John noted the
shuttle parking system was less than ideal as well. Despite the up and down weather there
seemd to be good turn out of people and planes (DC3, 2 Staggerwings, B25, among others)

Shawn Li discussed his busy month which included moving to his hanger, first and second
engine start, as just today getting his Airworthines inspection out of the way. All went relatively
smoothly. Rough idling engine turned out to be a fouled plug. His DAR (Scott?) gave him a
restriction that limits landing at Paine only after his airplane has 5 hours on it. So awkwardly, he’ll
need to depart Paine and land at Arlington for first flight and then 1 or 2 more flights at Arlington
before returning to PAE. Nevertheless, congrats Shawn on getting another RV7 in in the air
soon.

Henry Herbert bought a Cozy in Florida and has a great story to tell of his adventure back to WA.
His images weren’t loading so we agreed to have him do a show and tell at the June meeting.

Mike covered while we tried to figure out the image problem by recounting his “unplanned”
purchase of his Avid Catalina a few years back.

We breifly touched on Summer Flyouts. The folks present seemed really interested by a Orcas
flyouy/camp out this Summer. John and I will float a few dates and see if we can get a few folks
together. Tom Staggs and John Marzulli are both flying to Oshkosh this year and promise a trip
write up and presentation this Fall. Sounds like a good Turtle and the Hare story if you ask me.

Finally for our main presentation, we welcome John Smutny of The Great Northwest Air Race.
He walked us through its history and current operation. In it’s 5th year, this race is based out of
Euphrata. This year’s race is June 21st and all sizes of planes are welcome, even rentals. Looks like a blast to me. $50 fee covers race and prerace dinner. Details can be found at http://sportairrace.org/archive/id323.html.
John is also looking for volunteers if anyone who can’t fly are interested in participating.

The January chapter meeting was held at 7 p.m. on January 21, 2014, in our usual location, the Redmond Library. Thanks to John Marzulli, our VP, for running the show while Matt (President) was off the continent.
Rob Kochman (Secretary) had nothing to report.

Jason Hills (Treasurer) reported that our efforts to open a new chapter bank account at BECU were in progress, but not yet complete. The great news was that Bank of America cashed our cashier’s check from the closing of our previous account, so we no longer need to worry about the check expiring. Jason refused the offer of an escort to his car.

Our speaker this month was Paul Wolf, the State Airport Manager, who runs all 16 state-managed airports in Washington. Paul talked about his role, as well as WSDOT Aviation more generally. He described the many purposes of the state-run airports—a clear, compelling message necessary to maintain funding amid tight state budgets. Paul had great pictures and stories of some of the recent efforts to preserve and also meaningfully improve airport facilities, as well as some stories of people’s attempts to damage property, both intentionally and unintentionally. The state work crews work hard to maintain and improve the airports, but they also rely on volunteers, so our chapter members should consider joining a work party or organizing one of our own. Paul also drove home the point that it’s important to check NOTAMs (including published NOTAMs, which would be found in the A/FD) for runway closures or other hazardous conditions before landing at a state airport. Thanks, Paul!
Our next meeting is at our usual time and place: Tuesday, February 18 at 7 p.m. in the Redmond Library. Xylon Saltzman, Founder of one-G simulation, will be presenting. http://www.flyone-g.com/
Our Annual December Meeting is on Tuesday, Dec 17th at the Redmond Library. There will be things on the agenda: a White Elephant gift exchange, and at the end of the meeting we will transition leadership to the new team. If the awards from the EAA arrive in time, we will also recognize people who contributed to our chapter in 2013; however some shipping issues may force us to wait one month for that ceremony.

The Main Event
Meanwhile, get your Aviation White Elephant wrapped and ready. Camouflaged wrapping always encouraged.

Since we have some newer folks this year and for us forgetful types here's the rules from Santa Culver himself:

The complete set of rules is more or less as follows:

$20 or less aviation-related gift. Anything for the shop is also "aviation related" in an EAA chapter.

Only those that bring a gift can participate.

We draw numbers to determine order that people go in

Whoever is "up" gets to choose whether to pick a net new gift, or to claim one that someone else already claimed

If you are the victim of a gift steal, you are next to claim a gift. Same rules: pick net new or steal from someone else

A given item may only be claimed 3 times, including the first person to get the gift. After that it's "dead" and no longer in play

All gifts have to go home with the recipient. Until next year.

So join in the fun. Put some thought into what to share and we'll bring some snacks to help everyone debate whether they should choose the big box or the tiny one.

This month we'll try Italian fast food for a pre-meeting dinner. If you want to join us (definitely optional!), the Pallino is in Redmond Town Center, across from REI. The address (as if it matters) is: 7545 166th Ave NE, Space D110, Redmond, WA 98052. Maybe you want to plug it into your fish finder, though, in order to get there :)
Quick note for everyone about the upcoming board elections. I presented this info at the chapter meeting this evening, and am also planning to post it on our Facebook page.

Each year the chapter holds elections to select leaders for the coming year. We are a small chapter, and it is really important that everyone participate in order that fresh ideas continue to guide us. That’s not just words: ¬everyone needs to participate!

This year we are nominating three positions, and next year there will be four positions up for election. Each position is a 2-year term, and we will also accept nominations from the floor during the November elections. New officers will take office immediately following the December meeting.
Nominations:

VP – John Marzulli. John will be VP in Year 1, and President in Year 2
Treasurer – Jason Hills (incumbent, running for re-election)
Director – Chad Hankins

You can read the chapter bylaws at http://docs.eaa1440.org.s3.amazonaws.com/Chapter1440Bylaws.pdf

Thanks,

Our February meeting will be at the Redmond library on Tuesday, Feb 19, 2013. More to come shortly about the program.

If you are interested, Jeff Skiles will be in the area as part of the EAA Grassroots tour, and the Thun Field chapter will host him on Monday, February 18 at Thun Field. This is, of course, not our official meeting but nonetheless will be interesting if you are able to attend.

Jeff was the co-pilot on the US Air flight that wound up in the Hudson a few years back. Guess he likes goose hunting…

Thun is quite a hike for a weeknight. Nonetheless it will be worth your time! Jim Piavis and I were in a meeting with him at OSH (Airventure to newbies) last July – and Jeff is highly interested in EAA Chapters. The topic is nominally “how to grow aviation”; however the reality is that Jeff is an entertaining guy who will talk about most anything related to flying.

If you are able to attend, please do two things right away:

Visit www.eaa.org/Grassroots and RSVP. Space will be limited, so this is important!

Reply on the Chapter 1440 Email List so that we can figure out car pooling – how many and who wants to. Please do not post a comment here on the chapter blog to confirm -- we will likely miss your response if you do.

See you there!

Coupled with pure blue skies and temps in the seventies. Oh, and a dash of homebuilt airplanes and grilled burgers.
So went the EAA Chapter 1440 BBQ. It was the perfect use of our dues :) Here's some pics. Enjoy!
And see you next month at the meeting!
