Great flight, fun destination. The restaurant is in the terminal building, which is frozen in time from circa 2000 -- there is even a Windows 2000 anti-piracy ad on the wall.

The restaurant is nothing special -- in fact it's a typical commercial airport deli. However the former departure lounge now seats up to 30 in a private meeting room setting: with food served. Nice view of the runway from that room. If you are interested in eating there, they are open Tuesday thru Saturday (with Saturday being an experiment) from 9:00 - 3:30.

Click on any of the photos for a full-size image.

April Meeting

The normal monthy meeting will be held on Tuesday, 19 April 2011, 7:00 PM at the Redmond Library, This month we are in Meeting Room 1, which is next door to our usual room.

MotoCam will bring some of their small video cameras for the motor sports world. I'm not sure how you do it, but Mike mentioned that he "accidently" bought half an Avid Catalina and wondered if I'd come take a look. Hummm.. Mike is one of the well-known Cessna pilots on our e-mail list, so the conversion from Cessna, to finishing a half-complete project was going to be interesting for sure. Well...I had the opportunity to visit Mike and the project today and see what a Catalina looked like. I'd seen a video on the web, but hadn't had a chance to see one up close.

Well, as Mike said, it's probably 60-70% complete, and pretty close to applying the cover. The wings appear complete, most components are installed in the aft fuselage, some instruments, some wiring, the engine was installed at one time, and a lot of fiberglass is done. That said, there's still a lot to do.

Mike has some time in the Austrailian Air Force (avionics tech) and currently works for Microsoft. He and a partner bought the project basically from a neighbor, have access to a lakeside hangar on Lake Samm, and hope to use the Avid to fly to Harvey and Boeing Field to access their other aircraft (sure beats the drive!).

We should start seeing Mike around the Chapter meetingssoon, and look forward to seeing the Avid come together. However, this is a skill, when done properly, really hones how you fly the airplane with precision and confidence. For other photos, see http://cid-0f4ce38190a6485e.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/WCFC%202010?authkey=WuRm05lUyBQ%24&ct=photos

The plan was to attend the 2010 West Coast RV Formation Flying Clinic in Madera, CA, approx. 627 NM south in the lower Central CA Valley just north of Fresno. The trip started out on Friday AM about 10:00 AM with 2000’ OVC and some light scattered rain through southern WA. Weathermeister.com was showing OK weather with 2500 OVC through central OR, then broken and finally clearing into the CA Central Valley, but the winds were going to be fairly stiff out of the north with 15G25 or so on landing. I departed and headed down the valley over I-5 and was able to slowly creep up to about 3000 by Hillsborough, then up to about 4000 towards Eugene where the clouds finally went BKN. I was about 10 miles behind a group of 4 from the Portland area and we all pushed up to VFR on-top, climbing to 9500 for a nice ride down to Oroville CA. Around Roseburg, one of the guys lost an alternator and headed back. Lava had a new alternator replaced and eventually made it back down by evening. The Portland guys landed at OVE and I was about 10 minutes behind. We all got a car, then headed into town for some lunch and enjoyed the sun! We departed as a 3-ship, then picked up one more around the Auburn area to make it a flight of 4 heading into Madera (2 RV-8s, a -6 and my -7). Through the CA valley, winds were about 40kts on the tail giving us ground speeds of almost 200kts, but the flip side was the penalty heading north on Sunday! Overall, we had about 4.5 total hours down to Madera, arriving in time to get cleaned up for the evening ground school.

Ground school was run from 6:00 – 10:00 PM with some pizza thrown in for dinner and covered the key knowledge areas of the T-34 Formation Manual, with emphasis on the differences for the RVs. If you read the manual and understood it, this was a good review for the weekend. I suspect that by 10:00 PM, everyone was pretty beat and most folks headed off for the evening, show time was 8:00 briefing on Sat AM.

Most folks showed early to start prepping planes, uncover, pre-flight, clean bugs, etc, to be ready for an 8:00 briefing. All up, there were about 27 participants as of Friday evening so it promised to be a good weekend. The first flight of the day was to be a ride-along for those of us new to RV formation, with the newbie riding along with an experienced pilot to see what the correct sight pictures were for RVs so I rode along with Eddy (SoCal) in the back of his RV-8 and he proceeded to show me the way an aggressive rejoin is really done. If done right, you get a face full of airplane just before moving to the outside if you’re #3 (#2 forms to the inside of the turn – always). Although #4 had a communication problem, we had a good flight with some wing time, and re-joins before heading back.

2nd flight of the morning was with the same flight, this time the experienced pilot flew with the newbie in his airplane, so Eddy piled into my RV-7 for the ride. The flight was planned for the same profile, element departure, re-joins, fingertip, echelon, cross-unders, close trail, extended trail, and recovery back to Madera.

We had some lunch then got ready for the afternoon flights. The first flight of the afternoon was a 3 ship and I was solo, deemed not scary hazardous to health from the first flights, so we briefed up and went out and flew. Lead was Rodac, who had a Mazda-powered RV-6 in Navy colors. Nice airplane but it sure sounds like a big model airplane ;-). We departed as a 3-ship section take-off, formed up, then went out and generally flew the same profile, but added some extended trail exercises. This is basically follow-the-leader with a 1000’ separation in trail, which is way too much fun!

After debrief, there were a group sitting around, and Rodac asks, “anyone want to go fly a 7 ship?” Well, with that we were all briefing up 7 ship formation composed of a 4-ship and a 3 ship. Whoo-hoo. I was #2 for Alpha flight, so all I needed to do was just stay on lead, good thing since I was starting to get beat. Even with form flights under an hour, a newbie comes back sweating and tired from gripping the stick and throttle. One really has to learn to relax and take time to shake out feet and arms as this is fairly intense flying for sure. So we went out and flew what we briefed, going from a fingertip and a 3-ship vee formation, to a big delta and back before coming back in. This was somewhat of a short flight, but a lot of fun. If you’re in the front of the formation, you don’t generally see the mass behind you, but if you’re bringing up the rear, you do get to see that.

That’s where we were for the dinner flight Saturday evening. The plan was to fly to Sierra Skypark from Madera for a Tri-tip BBQ dinner at one of the guy’s airpark homes. I rode along with Charlie Flight lead and just took some pictures and it was good to see the group of RVs out in front of us for the 15 mile flight. It’s always interesting to hear “RV-flight of 17, entering extended downwind for the initial..” Some complain about the 3 or 4 in a pattern at the local non-controlled airports, but try getting 17 on the ground! We taxied in and pretty much filled the streets with airplanes and enjoyed a great BBQ dinner. And for those of us not flying, a couple beers were really good after a long day. The folks involved in this come from really interesting backgrounds, with the majority non-military. There’s the 1st grade teacher (Schoolmom), a retired volcanologist (Lava), a couple who work for Van’s Aircraft, a professional photographer for The Governator (Forrest), some folks from the SF Bay Area high-tech industry, a couple airline pilots, a retired Navy Flight Doc, and others, all with an interest in formation flying and very diverse backgrounds.

About the time I returned to Madera, I checked the weather for Sunday and it wasn’t looking too good for the Puget Sound area. Winds, low ceilings and scattered rain was forecast for late afternoon, so I went to bed hoping it was going to change overnight. Well, that didn’t happen, so I made the call to skip the big all-up formation flight and head back early. The winds out of the north were fairly stiff so I endured a 138kt ground speed at 4500’ all the way up the Central Valley, bummer! All this did was burn gas as I can’t go LOP and make decent time. I tried climbing to 6500 to see what that looked like, but lost an easy 10 kts of groundspeed. Approaching Shasta, there was a very distinct lenticular around the peak, so I wasn’t too sure of the bumps going through the Dunsmuir area, but they weren’t too bad. Past Shasta, the winds subsided a little and allowed a climb up to 8500 to go LOP. Since I burned a bunch of gas (11.5 GPH vs. a LOP of 7.9) a stop at Ashland, OR was in order to fill the tanks. Not the friendliest place, but it served it’s purpose and I was off the ground in about 30 minutes heading north again. I found it interesting to watch the altimeter settings increase rapidly as I headed north from Madera, then see them start to decrease again as I flew through the high, and transitioned to a tailwind. Once around Eugene, the clouds started up again with 4500 BKN, so I slipped below for the rest of the trip. It was fairly nice up through the Portland area, then started to go downhill from Kelso north, arriving around the Puget Sound area to a nice 15kt west wind, 2500 OVC and some scattered rain. Yep, back in Seattle!

Overall, a really great weekend with lots of flying. Including, the trip down and back, I managed to put another 12.2 trouble-free hours on the RV, increase my formation skills, and socialize with a bunch of like-minded pilots.

EAA News - New Member Benefit: Free Admission to Hundreds of Great Museums

EAA News - New Member Benefit: Free Admission to Hundreds of Great Museums

In a note received from EAA, you only get the passes for those museums greater than 90 miles from home, so if you're traveling check the list! If you check the link in the EAA post, we should have free admission to the Evergreen Air and Space Museum, but not the local Puget Sound attractions! We were all pretty much anticipating a low turnout due to the alternate location, but we were all pleasantly surprised with an attendance of about 20 to hear what Joe Hull had to say about his close brush with certain stardom.

Since the program was going to run a little short we started the meeting a little late, well, it was really because the dinner crowd was running a little late from the fine feast at the local Red Robin. We did introductions with one new guest, Glen Braun who is in the process of building an RV-12, and several other folks we haven't seen in a while. It was good to see everyone back!

The program was scheduled to be a video on Joe Hull's and Tom Staggs' trip north of the border to lend their canards for a TV shoot. Once we determined that the audio really wasn't the fault of Joe's computer, we managed to see the video with reduced audio, and Joe providing color commentary. Overall an entertaining 22 minute video.

Post-video, we stood around a bit and socialized, cleaned up the room and departed for the evening. Next month we're hoping to have Tom Staggs give his presentation on first flights as we have a Zenith, and two RVs that are getting close to first flights hopefully this Summer.

AirVenture 2010 NOTAM

You know it's starting to get close, and winter behind us when the official Airventure NOTAM is released. For anyone dealing with electrics, this is a must-view site with quick responses to questions by AeroElectric author Bob Nuckolls.

Penetrating Oils Compared
Machinist's Workshop magazine actually tested penetrants for break out torque on rusted nuts. Significant results! They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.
Penetrating oil Average load
None ..................... 516 pounds
WD-40 .................. 238 pounds
PB Blaster ..............214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ...... 127 pounds
Kano Kroil ............ 106 pounds
ATF-Acetone mix... 53 pounds

The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone.
Note: The "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this one particular test. A local machinist group mixed up a batch and all now use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price.

4th Annual Fantasy Field Fly-In: June 19th

Hello to Everyone!

Good golly, has it been a year ALREADY? Yes we are preparing for the 4TH ANNUAL FANTASY FIELD FLY-IN, hosted by Kelly and Terry Sullivan.

I can’t get over the amount of emails I have received about this year’s fly-in! Thank you all for your support and encouragement. This year our fly-in will be on Saturday June 19th, which is the day before Father's Day. We had to move it up a week due to some scheduling conflicts with the SuperCub Competition up north on the following weekend. Kelly likes to attend that competition and show those Cub drivers how to fly!!!

We are clearing more fields for aircraft parking and camping. I have spent the winter months cruising Craigslist for more tables and chairs. I was thinking we should have a theme to this year’s fly-in.....everybody wear Hawaiian shirts! I plan to take lots of pictures this year, since I have heard that a couple of rarities will be flying in!

What better way can you think of to start the summer off, than a home-grown, grassroots fly-in, in your own backyard!

We love having this fly-in, because it is more than just aviation: it feels more like a big family barbecue. Young and old, pilots, teachers, doctors, beauticians, engineers, blue collar and more; we all have a great time together and enjoy the sun, good food, great friends and family, flying and fun. Last year’s attendance was awesome, with almost 50 aircraft! We had planes come in from as far away as California and eastern Montana.

We enjoyed such a wide representation of our aviation community; from certified's to experimentals, ultralights, trikes and 'chutes. I would love to host a balloon (hint-hint), or maybe even another impromptu fly-by (like we had the first year, by a "colorful" group of Navions.)

As usual, we (no, I don’t have a mouse in my pocket) will be doing the grilling and provide the beverages; all we ask is that you bring your most delicious side dish, salad or dessert!

There is always a restroom facility, plus a wash-up station and we are hoping to provide more shade areas for people to relax under. We will still have plenty of off-street parking for those who choose to drive in. And yes, there will be camping sites available, especially for those who want to stay for happy hour, hangar talk and that late night poker game.

I am getting excited just talking about it! Put it on your calendar....June 19th! Can't wait to see you all here! Bring on the sunshine!!!!

The coordinates are:

N 46*35.270'
W 122*51.946'

RUNWAY 10/28

We are known as FA99, Fantasy Field Airstrip a private field, and on the sectional.
Until then, wishing you all good flying and smooth air!

Kelly & Terry Sullivan
237 Forest Napavine Rd, E.

FANTASY FIELD AIRSTRIP - FA99

Chehalis, WA. 98532-8707

flighty05@aol.com

terryasullivan@aol.com

Ellensburg Coffee & Donuts

We received this one from Mike Katz, EAA Chapter 492 in Ellensburg, WA. Ron Wattaja volunteered to do an interesting presentation from his vaired past, when a future aircraft homebuilder got into teh submarine business via his CAP Squadron. Based on the presentation, his Squadron CO decided it was a good idea to build a wet submersable from a tip tank off a T-33. The presentation outlined the efforts to figure out how to make a workign submersable out of the tip tank, encountering many of the same issues aircraft builders encoutner; where to place the battery, and weight and balance. In this case, it sure sounded like it spent more time on the bottom of Midwest lakes, then cruising the waters! Overall an interesting presentation.

Ron also gave us a preview of his most recent AB accident statistics. He has an interest in diving through the accident reports and really getting to the real story of the reports. Ron will be presenting an indepth report on AB accidents in the May or June time-frame.

Thanks goes to Ron for coming out to Redmond and presenting for the meeting!

Oshkosh 2010 (I know, the name changed but old habits die hard!)

If you really needed a reason to attend Oshkosh, this seems to be a pretty good one!

DC-3s Flicking to Join AirVenture Birthday Bash (from EAA.org).
They're coming from everywhere; some three dozen DC-3 and C-47 aircraft that have already shown interest in participating in "The Last Time..." 75th anniversary celebration of the aircraft at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2010.

The list of potential aircraft that will be participating in the DC-3 mass arrival is still being finalized, but many of the participants are listed at www.TheLastTime.org website dedicated to the formation arrival coming to Oshkosh.

The registration list for the mass arrival on July 26 has reached its limit of 35 aircraft, because of limitations at the staging airports. Other DC-3/C-47 operators are welcome to participate, however, by individually flying to AirVenture, which will be held July 26-August 1 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh. Those aircraft are encouraged to contact Adam Smith at EAA headquarters at asmith@eaa.org.

"This is a tremendous response in just the several weeks since the 75th anniversary commemoration was announced," said Smith, EAA's vice president of membership. "We are still receiving inquiries from owners of some very special DC-3s, and we welcome all of them to be a part of AirVenture 2010, whether or not they are able to participate in the mass arrival."

Several of the DC-3s have been regular visitors to Oshkosh in past years, while others have made only rare appearances or have never been here. In all, it promises to be the largest airborne group of DC-3s assembled since World War II, and likely for the last time ever.

One of the details being solved currently is parking for this many magnificent DC-3s at Oshkosh. It’s anticipated that AeroShell Square, along with the Warbirds and Vintage Aircraft parking areas, will be fully engaged in showcasing these venerable airplanes.

Fewer than 100 of the aircraft remain airworthy in the United States, meaning that nearly half of the current fleet could be present at AirVenture 2010. The weeklong festivities at Oshkosh will also include historical and technical forums/presentations, fly-bys and a special evening DC-3 commemorative program at Theater in the Woods.

Additional EAA AirVenture information, including advance ticket and camping purchase, is available online at www.airventure.org. Possibly the most useful was a bag of old clecos, but not to be out-done by pilots range extender. Either will come in handy when absolutely necessary! Otherwise, a good time was had be all and for once in the last couple years, we weren’t snowed out.

January Pres Column

First I want to thank Mike for the last year of leadership he has provided. I also want to thank Jim for stepping up again to fill the VP position. It is this sort of participation that has helped our chapter thrive in only a few years of existence.
Participation has been perhaps the strongest aspect of our chapter. In the next year I want to expand our chapter’s role. There is much we can do that will help ourselves, our chapter and General Aviation.
It has been a while since we have had a project visit. I would like to make an open call to those whole are building, no matter what stage your project is in. I have been threatening to do one for a while, so on February 20th you are invited to my garage where I will finally make good on this threat.
Looking back on the last year it seems that our best meetings have been outside of the Library. With the return of flying weather only a few months away we should consider what can be done. Tom and Mike’s “Zagat of the Air” idea gives us one more excuse to burn some 100LL ( as if we need an excuse to fly ).
The topic of Young Eagles comes up every few months. I am excited to say Jim is looking into the insurance issues around these sorts of flights. More information and announcements will be coming in February.
Amazingly our club has had the tendency in the last several years to have many members reach the same point in their projects at the same time. We should take advantage of this. In the next several months I would like us to have a member driven and hosted workshop on electrical systems. We may have other members who are interest in metal work, wood work or composites. If you are interested in sharing some work space, knowledge or of a qualified instructor please let us know.
Once again thank you for letting me have the opportunity to lead our club.

<insert>

John
